Scheiner is a Houston trial attorney and the principal of
the Scheiner
Law Group, P.C. He has practiced law in Texas since
1992. Scheiner established a private practice in 1995. Since
then he has represented clients in a wide variety of legal
matters in state and federal courts. Scheiner has extensive
trial experience and is Board Certified in Criminal Law
by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. In 2006,
2007,
2008
& 2009,
Scheiner was named one of Houston's Top Lawyers by H-Texas
Magazine. The American Trial Lawyers Association has named
Scheiner one of the " Top
100 Trial Lawyers" in the State of Texas. In 2009,
Texas Monthly Magazine named Scheiner a " Texas
Super Lawyer" in the categories of Criminal Law,
Driving while Intoxicated (DWI) and Federal White Collar
Defense.
Scheiner is a Lifetime Member of the National
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, an associate
member of the Texas District and County Attorneys Association,
a member of the Juvenile Law Section of the State Bar
of Texas and a Fellow of the College of the State Bar
of Texas. He is the Chair-Elect
of the Computer and Technology Section of the State Bar
of Texas. Scheiner is a former director of the Texas
Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA) and a
former director of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers
Association (HCCLA). He is still very active in TCDLA
and HCCLA. In 2004, Mr. Scheiner was named the HCCLA Outstanding
Member of the Year.
Scheiner has published and lectured to fellow attorneys
in numerous legal conferences on topics ranging from criminal
defense, DWI defense, cross examination and the effective
use of technology in the courtroom. Scheiner has also
lectured the Houston Psychiatric Society on the Texas
Insanity Defense. He is on the annual faculty of the Texas
Trial Lawyers College. Scheiner is also an annual co-director
of the TCDLA "Top Gun DWI" seminar, which has
drawn hundreds of attorneys in Texas and elsewhere to
study cutting edge criminal defense tactics.
In
an effort to further his professional education, Scheiner
has studied police procedure and is a trained practitioner
and instructor of standardized field sobriety testing
by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration
and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He is one of a handful of attorneys in the United States
to have completed an American Chemical Society-approved
course in "gas chromatography" - the science
behind blood testing of alcohol and other substances.
Scheiner has also completed an intensive Spanish language
"immersion" program at the internationally acclaimed
Academia Hispano Americana in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
In his professional spare time, Scheiner serves as a
Hearing Examiner for the Civil Service Commission of the
City of Houston. He presides over cases in a tribunal
of record and resolves disputes between City of Houston
employees (including firefighters and police officers)
and their respective departments. His written opinions
are noted for their fairness and consistency.
Education
Scheiner received his juris doctorate from the University
of Houston Law Center in 1992. As a law student he was active
in trial and appellate advocacy. He earned first-place honors
in Law Center mock trial, moot court and negotiation competitions.
He was also a member of the National Mock Trial team. Upon
graduation Scheiner was inducted into the Order of the Barristers.
Scheiner earned a bachelor of arts degree in communication
(with an emphasis in broadcast journalism) from Trinity
University in San Antonio in 1986. As an undergraduate student,
he was active in Trinity's journalism program. He was a
news anchor for the school's FM radio station and a sports
writer for the campus newspaper.
Other Experience
In three years following law school and before establishing
his own firm, Scheiner served as an Assistant County Attorney
for the Montgomery County Attorney's Office in Conroe, Texas.
He handled trials and appeals and gained extensive courtroom
experience. As a prosecutor, Scheiner compiled an outstanding
trial record and became known for his energy and enthusiasm.
These traits have accompanied him throughout every endeavor
of his legal career.
In three years between college and law school, Scheiner
worked in the field of corporate public relations. He wrote
executive biographies, company newsletters, and corporate
pieces for newspapers and magazines. He also coordinated
press events and handled media relations.
Personal
Grant Scheiner was born in Rockville Centre, New York in
1964. He was raised on Long Island before moving to Texas
to attend college in 1982. He has lived in Houston, Texas
since enrolling in law school in 1989.
